Over 1.3 million students are officially enrolled in Indonesia's 415 public and private teacher training colleges (LPTK) or universities. Only 100 of these institutions however are accredited. Consequentially, the current teaching workforce in Indonesia is dominated by unqualified teachers. This is unfortunate as a fairly new Indonesian government policy, passed in 2005, has increased teacher and lecturer's salaries and in turn attracted a larger number of fresh high school graduates to pursue teacher education and profession. Despite higher compensation, quality of Indonesia's school teachers is still below standard - a primary factor to Indonesia's overall poor quality of education. This issue calls for a greater government and public attention to improve quality of Indonesia's teacher training and education. |
